Marfa Film Festival
Since 2007 the Marfa Film Festival has attracted talented filmmakers, international press, industry professionals, and attendees from around the world. The remote landscape surrounding Marfa has witnessed a fascinating history of art and film which continues to unfold in 2013. Festival attendees enjoy an intimate get-away immersed in the unique culture, spectacular scenery, and clear air of the Marfa plateau, invariably an unforgettably enchanting experience.
Far-flung yet uniquely sophisticated
Marfa’s inhabitants past and present built a remarkable enclave with uncommon amenities hours from the nearest megastore or franchise restaurant, only an hour’s drive from the Texas / Mexico border. Our festival proposes a breezy counterpoint to the chaotic and competitive environments often found on the film festival circuit.
Typical happenings at the Marfa Film Festival include open air screenings in the vast serenity of a starlit west texas prairie, impromptu musical performances commandeering the streets, and unexplained mystery lights dancing on the outskirts of town. Life feels different, spacious.
The Marfa Film Festival does not designate winners. Our program celebrates innovation and excellence in film through mindful curation and fostering a relaxed social space where up-and-coming filmakers and adventurous cinefiles mix with film veterans and living legends in a captivatingly scenic, culturally rich environment. Festival alumni include Dennis Hopper, Larry McMurtry, Lou Reed, Omar Rodriguez – Lopez, and Heath Ledger. Screenings feature works from promising newcomers and established filmmakers as well as beloved or forgotten classics.
Festival coordinators headquarter in the famous and historic Hotel Paisano where James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, and Rock Hudson lived while filming “Giant”. Many guests return annually to celebrate with us in the open atmosphere which tends to prevail among the locals, artists, patrons, and visitors who attend.
Founded in 2007, the first Marfa Film Festival of 2008 quietly won the fond respect of attendees and attracted wider notice in the film circuit world. Unforgettable festivals in 2009 and 2010 affirmed our rising, uniquely enchanted reputation. In 2011 and 2012 we rested.
The Fourth Annual Marfa Film Festival will take place June 26 – 30, 2013.
We will screen a diverse mix of features, shorts, music videos, and experimental works. Over five extraordinary days we’ll showcase films which transcend time with indelible images and engaging storytelling, celebrating cinema’s power to inspire and transform, drawing us deeper into the mystery of the human experience.
