LET'S TALK

Chris Andrews walked 3,200 miles across the United States to research the effects of digital overuse on our wellbeing. His spiritual and social journey challenges Americans to reimagine their relationship with technology and find balance in the digital age. This film meets Chris in Joshua Tree National park after 2,900 miles on the road. HEARTSTRUCK (WILD HUNGER) - HAMILTON LEITHAUSER

Music video shot in Marfa for Hamilton Leithauser featuring many locals. “This song is about catching yourself off guard when an emotion hits a little harder than you were ready for. It’s a desperate and funny situation. The desperation can be a little bit ridiculous, which can be a little bit funny, but it’s also desperate, so it’s agonizing. I thought “Wild Hunger” should be delivered with huge passion and energy, and I needed a fierce and booming voice as a counterbalance.

DER DUNKLE REIGEN

In the turmoil after the First World War, young Agnes and her mentor Jadwiga reach an isolated, Austrian village. Although they are initially rejected and denounced by the villagers, the two curative women help with their medical knowledge. They heal the blindness of Frieda, the sacristan's daughter. In the process Frieda and Agnes get closer. So close that the village won't accept the sacrilege. In the fight for respect, morals and social norms, everyone loses in the end.

SPECIAL WOMEN IN FILM TRIBUTE

MFF IN CONVERSATION WITH JESSICA MITRANI

SashaArutyunova2014MARFA.jpeg

Marfa Film Festival will honor the work of multimedia female artist Jessica Mitrani, a Colombian-born, New York–based artist whose work traverses a range of media, including performance, theater, objects, and film.

Jessica Mitrani’s provocative explorations into female subjectivity are deeply invested in notions of desire as both an agency exercised by women and as a social apparatus that suspends women’s potential by delimiting them as objects. Her amusing acts, often expressed in an affective range that is excessive, absurd, and melodramatic, recontextualizes and reconfigures quotidian gestures, scenes, and objects in a magical realist realm that is nothing short of fantastical.

The program will open with a very special screening of selected short films and followed by a conversation with the artist.

DESSERT-DISASTER

A found footage work which compares the parallel cinematic language of dessert commercials with that of ‘disaster porn’ found in the news and on the Internet. The sound, pulled from pedestrian-produced videos of demolitions, disasters, and storms, expresses the contradictions of the contemporary crowd; its insatiable appetite for destruction and arousal; its inattention, its inability to look away; its anxiety and its ecstasy.

AN AMERICAN IN TEXAS

An angry, crackling and defiantly disordered underclass of nowheresville punk- rock kids, see their band Surgeon General’s Warning (SGW) as their ticket out of small town Texas, as 1990 comes to a close. The band drops acid, plays gigs and carries out calculated acts of vandalism around town to the television soundtrack of 24-hour newscasts about Operation Desert Storm and devotion to country at any cost. Faced with the reality of a dead end job at the plastic plant, a life in the oil field, or fighting a war that has no meaning to them, the group's chaos and imminent adulthood leaves them completely vulnerable for what ensues.
